Beetle Infestation
This is the information Ken said that he would get to us about the beetle problems we are having and the method to help protect some of our trees.
Spray that contains certain formulations of carbaryl (Sevin SL or Carbaryl 4L) or permethrin (Astro and others) are registered for this purpose. If phloem tissue has been reached by the beetle, then the beetle is protected by the tree bark and is not affected by the insecticide. Spray all sides and surfaces of the tree trunk up to 30 feet high or to the site where the trunk narrows to 6 inches. If part of the trunk is missed, that part is vulnerable to attack. Apply preventative sprays about med-June. Treatments are usually effective up to one year. Repeat them until the insect outbreak passes. Caution! Follow pesticide directions.

The loggers are still getting up past the church camp but the first hill off the highway is slick so you need to have it in 4 wheel drive before you try it. There is about 2' of snow on top and the roads are snow covered so it made for fun snowmobiling. Snowmobiles have made it past the timberlane turn off but the only truck traffic has been up the road where the loggers are keeping it plowed. We came off the power line road and it was good snowmobiling. Hope you had a good holiday! Janice Guymon |

Made it up to the canyon on Friday. It was a beautiful clear day and actually not too cold (About 20 degrees).
As Matt stated the main road is plowed up to and continues up Timberline road. The main Argyle canyon road has been plowed for one lane of traffic as far as I went and that was Mill canyon. There are good pull off spots for a truck, and possibly a trailer, at Mill and Deer canyon. In speaking with Blake, the road is plowed down to his property about 10 miles down Argyle.
I took My Rhino and tried to ride the frozen snowmobile tracks up Deer canyon, only to have to dig and winch it out a few times. I decided to walk up deer canyon to the cabin; I needed the exercise anyway.
I am surprised that there is only about 18 inches of snow, but suspect February and March might fill up the canyon. |

I made it up there this last weekend and the main road is plowed up to, and then continues up the Timberline road but I would not recommend anyone driving down the main argyle road due to it does get down to a very small one lane road beyond the Timber lane road going down Argyle canyon with no where to turn around if you have a trailer with sleds etc. A 4X4 truck could make it on down the canyon and probably find some where to turn around or just continue on down to nine mile canyon and out. I went in on snowmobiles and was able to stay in snow the whole way from the top. It looks like there have been many people up there as the road I take to my cabin (Beaver Canyon) by the Frisby's was also well snowmobile traveled. I did not go any further down the canyon from my turn off, but as usual the canyon was beautiful all under the white blanket of snow. There is only about 16 to 20 inches of snow in most places so I hope we get a lot more before winter is over. Hope you get an opportunity to go in there to your place at some point this year as winter time is always such a beautiful treat to be up there. It's so quiet and peaceful, just a slice of heaven.

Hi, All. We had every intention of getting in two weekends ago; got our snowmobile up there, and it wouldn't start. There was about 2 feet of snow up there. We are going to try again this weekend; took the snowmobile in to the shop and they worked on it, got it running well. We have a nice big skidoo "sled" that can carry over 200 lbs of supplies (have to take a chainsaw with us in case trees are down across the road), plus snowshoes "just in case". The plan is to go in and burn slash piles from our tree cutting activities last summer. We'll let the forest service know before lighting any fires.
Funny thing - our little lab really did not like the 5 degree weather two weekends ago. I bought her a coat and booties, now she is good to go. She will have to run the two miles in, so she needs to be prepared. Our property is up the Avintaquin Campground road, near the Martinez cabin.
